"the slow death of Old Fashioned Courtesy"
I know this is going to sound terribly old fashioned but I am still a true believer in "Common Courtesy & Politeness". Nothing frustrates me more than both Adults & kids not saying Please or Thankyou, as my mother used to say to my daughter when she was little & forgot "Did you leave your Manners at home?". Is holding open a door for the next person as you walk through really going to hurt you? In a crowded street, giving a little wave of thanks to the driver that paused to allow you to pass, will not cost you a cent? BUT wait there's more... My biggest blood pressure boiler is the lack of manners displayed by many mobile phone users AND to make matters worse, the common acceptance of it. Someone forgot to give me the memo that gave permission for courtesy and politeness to be tossed out the window when it comes to Mobile phones... I was having a chat with my daughter, when she starts texting someone, I am like, "umm I am talking to you please pay attention", and she is like, "umm I am mum". Could have fooled me? She didn't even think she was being rude!
It seems to be socially acceptable to just stop mid conversation with someone and chat or text on your mobile? If you were socialising and a 3rd person arrived, would you alienate your friend by talking to the new person exclusively, without even an "excuse me a moment'? Acceptable on a mobile phone! Surely the chat about the shoes on sale can be discussed when you get home, not while your out with someone else and they stand around waiting for you like a stale bottle of beer?
Pick up the bread on the way home, phoning to let your mum know you arrived safely, being on call for work, and the like, I consider to be acceptable reasons to answer your phone, though of course with an "Excuse me a moment, I am sorry but I need to take this, I won't be long".... How about treating the mobile the same as other social situations. Next time you are with someone and the other person gets an unnecessary phone call, give them a Rev up, maybe if we all start doing that, the phone might revert back to it's original purpose 'a Tool', and manners might start to make a comeback??? Let's set a good example for our kids!
Best Wishes, Noely, Community Site Co-ordinator
