Recently we had someone email us with a question that got us all thinking... When was the Sunshine Coast named the 'Sunshine Coast'? Why, and Who named it?
One of those questions that when read out, all in the office look at each other blankly and go "I have no idea", "Never thought of that"... Since receiving this question I have hassled everyone, clients, Friends, you name it? I have received all sorts of different answers, so if anyone can answer this authoritively please email us and let us know... Not knowing now is excruciating!
As normal though, it got me thinking? At netball for example, only the Coach was born & bred here on the Sunshine Coast, 2 teams of kids parents were nearly all from somewhere else and have lived on the Coast for varying amounts of time. Looking at the Sunshine Coast historically, the growth, particularly in the last 30 years has been phenomenal, and with all this recent media discussion on what it means to be an 'Australian' it got me to thinking about what it means to be a Sunshine Coaster?
The majority of the population are not born here, and in fact many are not even Queenslanders, from what I can gather from my daughters friends they don't even really learn local history at school, or if they do it is limited (which is shame). Each of the Councils have good websites, and there is quite a lot of information around in regard to specific historical landmarks or towns, though not generic Sunshine Coast background info? Most people who live here have a pretty good feeling of identity with being an Australian, or Queenslander (we will excuse those New South Welshmen who come out of the woodwork at State of Origin LOL!), though what is the identity that the average Sunshine Coaster can relate to?
We all know our region is naturally beautiful, vibrant, artistic etc etc, though who are we that make up this region and our lifestyle? I am putting up an area on the site called "Your Sunshine Coast Thoughts"... If you have any interesting History to share, Questions you have, Gripes, Thoughts... And even better Answers or information... Toss it in to us, and maybe we can start a little Sunshine Coast Brains trust here and build towards an idea of who we are and what we care about?
