 The Sunshine Coast???
We recently had to go to Redcliffe for the Sunshine Coast Regional Final for Fanfare, which is a state school, statewide music competition held every 2 years. Yes, you did read correctly before, we had to travel to Redcliffe for the 'Sunshine Coast' regional final.
To our utter horror as proud Sunshine Coasters, Sunshine Beach State High School was the only actual 'Sunshine Coast' school there? The other schools came from Pine Rivers, Petrie, Bray Park etc... The ultimate winner was Pine Rivers who will now be 'proudly representing the Sunshine Coast' in the big gala Fanfare final? How nice is that, a Brisvegas School will be representing the Sunshine Coast???
What is sad is that this situation happens in other 'so called' regional representative arenas as well :( The 'State' Government forced amalgamation upon us all, and to a certain degree I can understand why. Though, if they had all these wonderful reasons for the 'Sunshine Coast' to be a 'region' in it's own right, shouldn't this then flow on to all other areas? Schooling, Sport, Health, Entertainment etc... From the football team we 'don't have' in the Queensland Cup (association itself is Sunshine Coast Wide Bay), to articles about Apprenticeships & Trainees the state government refers to 'Sunshine Coast Wide Bay', I could go on with examples where we are NOT a stand alone region...
Now we are an officially recognised region we deserve the same benefits other large regions have. I'm not suggesting we all neglect our own backyards, though in each sector from schooling & sport, to Health & Services, we should be rallying together to ensure that we are fully represented as a 'Region in our own Right'! With a state government land sell off here, we are only going to get bigger, let's all make sure when we are represented on any stage, business, cultural, tourism etc., we are truly the 'Sunshine Coast' and proud to be so!
