La Ronde
sensual -- seductive -- scandalous
dark delicious new theatre
10 scenes. 10 characters. 10 sexual encounters.
Noosa Arts Theatre brings to the Sunshine Coast, a sensual, seductive
and scandalous Adults Only production of the classic play, La Ronde.
La
Ronde is R-Rated and a little risqu. Audiences can certainly expect to
feel confronted. Think Burlesque but expect a deeper look into human
intent, emotion and deception. Think sophisticated entertainment with a
razor sharp edge. Think dark and delicious new theatre. La Ronde will
delight and disturb.
In its original form, La Ronde was banned
and its playwright, Arthur Schnitzler, jailed; the material was simply
too scandalous for the European audiences of the early twentieth
century.
What about for contemporary Sunshine Coast audiences?
Director, Sam Coward doesn't seem to think so. Well known for
challenging his actors and audiences, Sam says La Ronde is just as
current, as relevant and as revealing an insight into class structure
and society's attitudes towards sex as it has always been.
Director,
Sam Coward has an enviable record in bringing to the coast cutting edge
theatre which thrills audiences. His production of Jesus Christ
Superstar in 1999 broke all box office records on the Sunshine Coast
and audiences responded enthusiastically to his production of Shout.
"We
have taken La Ronde off the page," says Sam, "having re-written with
the cast, a large percentage of the original script, which has already
been translated and adapted many times (The Blue Room being the most
widely recognised) we are taking sex and making it sexy...sometimes.
Other times, not so much."
He explains, "La Ronde is about sex
- the variations, the expectations, the preconceptions, the
misconceptions --and sex is not always nice. Audiences will be seduced,
sure; they will see and experience beauty but they will also cringe at
the grittier, uglier aspects of sex that we don't tend to talk about."
Sam believes sex is the last taboo.
La Ronde, with an
accomplished local cast that includes Tim Murfin, Stephen Moore, Carly
Partridge, Mary Eggleston, Xanthe Coward, Shane Ross, Sharon Grimley,
Kay Ellsum, Meg Monroe and Nathan Hynes, is bound to get audiences
talking. In various states of undress, the characters dance through a
series of sexual encounters, of which we see just ten in succession,
without an interval.
La Ronde is for people over 18 and contains some nudity and sexual themes.
