More about Love Letters by A.R. Gurney

Love Letters opens at Noosa Arts Theatre on 22 July. Love Letters has been hailed as "exhilarating, funny, moving" and "one of the most enchanting plays of our time".

Gurney's internationally acclaimed play traces the lifelong correspondence between Senator Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, and artist, Melissa Gardner. Gurney takes them from childhood through the trauma of adulthood, marriage, divorce and middle age.

Andrew and Melissa never speak directly to each other on stage, letting words convey all the emotions of a lifetime of experiences.

As opposites, each provides the other with what is needed. The irony is that they do not understand this until late in life. These are, in fact, star-crossed lovers. The play concludes on a poignant note, as we realize that the letters - the root of their lifelong relationship - are actually the instrument that keeps them apart.

You can't help but be touched by their sometimes funny, sometimes tragic lives and how this affects them both individually and jointly.

Love Letters featured in the Noosa Longweekend back in 2003 with Jean Kittson and Campbell McComas as Melissa and Andrew. It was a rave success and delighted audiences. So here is a wonderful chance for Noosa audiences once more to intimately enter the lives of two contrasting and poignant characters. You will be enriched and enthralled by the experience.

Well known local actor Jannine Ritchie is directing Love Letters with Liza Park and Paul Ritchie playing the roles of Melissa and Andrew. Paul has directed many successful shows at Noosa Arts Theatre including Carousel, Cabaret, Gigi and Hello Dolly and has appeared as Emil de Beque in South pacific and Edwin in Hotel Sorrento. Liza Park is a NIDA gradate who played Beverly Dalton in Love or Nearest Offer, winning the One Act Play best actress award. She has directed the successful productions of The Eulogy and The Narcissist.

Performances will be on July 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31 at 7.30pm with a matinee on July 25 at 2pm. Adults $22, Conc $18, Group $16, Child $10. Bookings on 5449 9343, online at www.noosaartstheatre.org.au or counter bookings from 9am to noon Tues to Sat at Noosa Arts Theatre, Weyba Rd.

To support Katie Rose Care Cottage at Doonan, 50% of ticket sales for the performance of Love Letters on Wednesday July 28 will be donated by Noosa Arts Theatre to this worthy charity.
