Glorious, Powerful, Beautiful Music

A blaze of trumpets, timpani and exuberant choral singing will characterise Noosa Chorale 15th Anniversary concerts on 16 and 17 May. What better way to celebrate our 15the anniversary than to choose music composed for royalty to celebrate their coronations and their triumphs. And who better to compose that music than Handel and Charpentier.

The program will comprise Handel's Coronation Anthems, his Royal Fireworks Music and Charpentier's Te Deum.

Handel composed music to immediately appeal to the ear and enthrall the listener. It is full of dramatic power and lyrical beauty. His four Coronation Anthems, written for the enthronement of King George II in 1727, also show his brilliance for composing grand ceremonial music. The most famous of these is Zadok the Priest which has been performed at every English coronation since. The other three lesser known anthems are stunning, juxtaposing festive fanfares with lilting, gently beguiling movements and ending with explosive, jubilant finales.

The Royal Fireworks Music was commissioned to celebrate the end of a war and to accompany a real display of fireworks. This well known attractive work is full of energy, surprises, grace and delightful musical melodies. Noosa Sinfonia will perform this work as well as accompany the two choral works.

While Handel had his Messiah oratorio and Haydn had his brilliant Creation oratorio, the lesser known Marc-Antoine Charpentier had his Te Deum. This little known piece is spectacular. It is some of the most beautiful and dramatic music you will ever hear. The Prelude is the signature tune of the Eurovision Song Contest. Its beginning is stunning and unforgettable.

The Te Deum is the great Christian hymn of thanksgiving and Charpentier was writing for the court of Louis XIV, the builder of Versailles. Charpentier's Te Deum is luxuriant, grand and dramatic yet exquisitely beautiful, uplifting and spiritual. It alternates between delicate sections for the solo singers and exultant choruses. Its ceremonial brilliance and powerful dramatic impact suggest that it must have been written in celebration of some special occasion.

These concerts will be under the direction of Adrian King who brought you the fabulous Carmina Burana concert in May last year and who has delighted audiences at the Christmas Cheer concerts for the last two years. Adrian is amazingly versatile, moving easily between modern, classical and Baroque forms of music and bringing an energy and unfailing insight to the performances of all Chorale concerts.

Renowned soprano, Louise Kennedy, will bring to this performance her international operatic experience, beautiful voice and powerful dramatic qualities. Bass, Michael Strasser, is a versatile singer who has performed impressively as chorister and soloist in many different musical styles. Kyle Hunter, tenor, and Anna Smith, mezzo soprano, are two young up and coming voices.

Noosa Chorale welcomes the support of the local Bendigo Community banks as sponsors for this concert.
